Last weekend Kevin & I headed to the Homebrew Emporium in Cambridge with one thing on our minds-Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The mission? Create an at home, DIY clone of our favorite beer. A few hours later we had homebrew bubbling. If you’re in Boston, I highly recommend checking out one of the Homebrew Emporium stores for all of your homebrewing needs. Kevin was the very lucky recipient of a start-up homebrew kit for his birthday last year. This trip, we picked up the ingredients (Cascade and Perle hops, malt extract & yeast) in our attempt to create a beer similar to...
I’ve enjoyed getting down and crafty with many DIY projects this holiday season. You can check out the wreath I made here and the cranberry liqueur here (bottled last night!) My friend, Amanda, and I have been taking on projects together since 1992-back when Lisa Frank was our Martha Stewart. This year, we decided to get elementary and made gingerbread houses. The end result was sugarcoated and fun to display at our Holiday Hoedown cocktail party. Gather: Print and cut these gingerbread house patterns before you begin. Transfer cut patterns to cardboard and cut the shapes out of the cardboard to use as...
The holiday season is a great time for DIY projects and gifts. Since finishing graduate school, I’ve taken advantage of my free time and found many opportunities to get crafty. If you find yourself stuck without a gift a few days before the holidays, this is a great one to put together in 10 minutes flat. It’s the perfect small gift for a friend, coworker, or in my case the numerous newlyweds of 2011. Bonus points for being a gift that keeps on giving for many Christmas trees to come. My cranberry liqueur concoction last weekend put me in the holiDIY mood! This weekend I finished a wreath inspired by a post on Two Junk Chix. The supplies were easy to find at the craft store and it included the use of two of my favorite crafting essentials-a hot glue gun and glitter. The wreath was super fun and easy to make. With a cup of hot chocolate in hand and Christmas Vacation on Netflix, the yarn balls will practically spin themselves. To get: yarn twine Tacky glue & a hot glue gun styrofoam wreath base styrofoam balls (enough to cover wreath base) wreath...
The unseasonably warm temps aren’t burning my holiday spirit! I’m looking forward to getting crafty this holiday season. From my experience, things end up looking the most homemade when you make them with a glass of wine in hand. Glitter everywhere, a hot, messy glue gun, and perhaps burgundy dye à la spilled wine. Allow no one to confuse your DIY with store bought. While I have many glittery & glued DIY gifts up my sleeve, who doesn’t love the gift of a warming beverage? This cranberry liqueur takes three weeks to home “brew” so get started now and bottle later....
Unfortunately, it’s not everyday that you attend an event that is peacock tutu attire appropriate. This costume was pure joy and only outdone by that Halloween in elementary school when my mom made me a tree costume complete with a bird’s nest (the clever bribe she won me over with after I originally asked to be a typewriter, true story.) Thanks to the genius behind The Train to Crazy, I created my modified version of the peacock tutu fit for an adult, or something like it. This tutu requires no sewing, cost about $20 in material and couldn’t have been more...
Although I take pride in being a rook, I’ve totally been-there-done-that Halloween 2010 (still looking for the pictures to prove it!) This year, I had no intention to continue the birds of a feather theme…until my obsession with Pinterest led me to The Train To Crazy‘s tutorial post describing my dream come true peacock tutu. When I received an invitation to a friend’s Halloween party I wasted no time and tackled the construction of my tailfeathers. Although I won’t deny that tutus and glitter and all things 5-year-old-girl still make me giddy, my boyfriend and I took it to the...
